An Idea of a Life
The Women’s Museum
Exhibition design
2024

The curtain was designed to support the exhibition An Idea of a Life at the Women’s Museum in which artists Lesley Asare, Meera Shakti Osborne, and Sarina Mantle responded to archaeological artefacts and historical records connected to Barking Abbey. The curtain was displayed alongside works from the artists plus 3D prints of found artefacts, offering insight into the women-led community that lived at the Abbey from the 7th to the 16th century. The curtain worked also as a soft divider and a flexible display surface that could be opened and closed and divide the space as needed.
An Idea of a Life was curated by Nephertiti Oboshie Schandorf, with support from Valence House Museum and Barking and Dagenham Archives and Local Studies Centre with a programme of public events led by New Town Culture.
