Exhibition catalogue for Where Have They Gone? by Fay Ballard, White Conduit Projects, 2025.

Fay Ballard explores how, even with an atheist’s understanding we naturally create rituals and stories to help us live with grief and the knowledge that life is finite The artist visited stone circles, burial chambers and found mourning traditions that soften the boundary between life and death. These sites brought to the fore the memory of her parents and inspired drawings that offer her mother a symbolic send-off, honour her father, and reflect the emotion felt in landscapes shaped by loss.

Working in black and white reflects philosophies that accept impermanence and the void. The elemental materials themselves carbon, calcium, oxygen quietly echo both where we come from and what we leave behind.
