A palimpsest of a building, Eastbury, sits tightly amongst an early 20th-century housing estate in Barking, East London. Almost scheduled for demolition shortly after World War I, purchased by The National Trust in 1918, and leased to Barking & Dagenham Council in 1934, the house remains unchanged in its exterior image. This is the first official guidebook telling its story, nearly 450 years since the house was built. This guide tells the story of the house, and the people who inhabited it, through key periods of its history over four centuries.
